Ramon Harris, 29, Remembered Following Fatal August Incident on Atlanta Beltline Near Ponce City Market
Ramon Harris, 29, died during an incident on the Atlanta Beltline near the Kroger at Ponce City Market on a Sunday afternoon in August.
Witnesses gathered in the busy area as the incident unfolded, and people who regularly use the Beltline continue to reflect on the loss.
Authorities charged 54-year-old Jonathan Hamby, who had faced approximately 30 previous arrests and was serving probation in DeKalb and Fulton counties.
Court records indicate that Hamby left custody in May after an earlier probation revocation involving missed appointments and incomplete court requirements.
Relatives described Hamby as living with severe mental illness and said they had repeatedly requested stronger court-ordered treatment.
On October 13, a Fulton County judge found Hamby unable to stand trial after doctors determined that Hamby could not understand the proceedings or assist the defense team.
The court moved the case to its competency calendar, with no proceedings scheduled before 2027.
Officials increased patrols along the Beltline following Harris’s death, while friends continue to mourn a life lost in a place shared by the Atlanta community.
